What is it? |
Why the BFC?The BFC is designed around exercises that emphasize functional and foundational movements. These exercises are functional because they are based on real world situational movements like reaching, squatting, twisting, balance, etc. and because they require so much core activation. They are foundational because in almost any type of physical activity you engage in, you will do some type of variation of these movements. A squat is a perfect example. Building these functional and foundational movements will not only help to increase overall strength and endurance, but, they will also help to improve athletic performance and decrease injury prevention. Learning how to do these movements correctly and efficiently are the basis of the BFC.
The BFC serves as a great assessment tool because the 8 exercises used in the challenge address Cardiovascular Fitness, Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance and Flexibility along with Agility, Balance, Coordination, Speed and Power. |
BFC is a Cupertino Middle School adopted body weight fitness assessment, performed a minimum of 4 times a year, that tracks students data over the course of 3 years in Upper and Lower Body strength/endurance and cardiovascular fitness. Ultimately, students use this data for goal setting for short term and longer term fitness planning. Exercises were carefully selected to target most of the major muscles and regions of the body in order for students to identify strengths and weaknesses.

The Bear Fit Challenge is classified as a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workout done in an AMRAP (As Many Reps As Possible) format using a 40/20 x 24 rounds structure. This means that they work for 40 seconds and rest for 20 seconds x 24 rounds (they go through each exercise 3 times). This is a 24 minute workout.
During the workout, the students record how many reps they do in 40 seconds and then record those totals on their ONLINE TEMPLATE. The online template will automatically generate graphs. Students will then analyze the data and assess their fitness levels at the end of the year. Online Templates will be provided on Google Classroom. |
